On June 14, 2025 I had the pleasure of receiving the 2025 Michigan Heritage Award https://traditionalarts.msu.edu/mha-awardee?kid=fa14de19-5465-4907-b4eb-2e823c438028 from Michigan State University. Not only was there a wonderful outpouring of love from the audience, but my children, Robert II, my daughter-in law Rosa, and my daughter Arnesia surprised me with an accapella song. I was recommended for this award by my musical partner, Matt Watroba, and nominated by my good friend Tim McGorey. A number of friends and associates wrote letters of support, and I have to admit to being moved to receive recognition for the work that I have attempted to do throughout my career, to acknowledge the creators and sustainers of blues and other forms of American Roots music.

I think that it imperative that we acknowledge the music and artistry of our musical and cultural ancestors. This point has recently been powerfully driven home to me with the passing of several on my musical heroes and influences. I felt the spirit of Josh White, Jr., Peter Yarrow, John Roberts and Mark Palms as I received this award. I thank everyone that played a part in receiving this womderful statement of recognition.
